The New River is an artificial waterway created to take clean water from the River Lea and Amwell Springs to London. It was completed in 1603 and travels through the borough of Enfield. In recent years the Enfield Loop has been bypassed by underground mains between Southbury and Bush Hill. However, this now-redundant part of the river is maintained for ornamental purposes.
