John Boyd, owner of Danson House, specially commissioned this painting as part of a suite of three. This is the view of the north side of Danson House by George Barret, probably painted around 1766. It depicts John Boyd himself on horseback with his family: the figure in the red waistcoat, which had been overpainted, was uncovered during conservation by English Heritage and may represent Boyd at a younger age. This is an informal view of the Boyd family at ease in their country seat. The painting has been updated over time by artists under Boyd’s instruction, particularly as fashions changed and the ladies attires were altered accordingly or new family members were born.
