This painting was inspired by Rupert Brooke's sonnet of 1909, from which the title derives:

Oh! Death will find me, long before I tire
Of watching you; and swing me suddenly
Into the shade and loneliness and mire

The artist was elected to the Royal Academy in the same year as this painting was completed and in 2000 became the Academy’s first Professor of Drawing.
