The painting shows a single-storey stone cottage with a thatched roof (not whitewashed) with two children in front of cottage feeding hens. In front of an adjacent dilapidated stone wall is a midden and an upturned wheelbarrow. Behind the wall is a two-storey whitewashed stone barn and a single-storey thatched building and hills (Sulby Tops and Glen) in background.
