This small picture and its pendant, 'Old Man Reading', are good examples of a specific type of Dutch painting. Pictures of older men, and particularly older women, were a popular sub-genre and were treated by many artists. While paintings of this subject can be considered as having a humorous element, they apparently display great affection and respect for the elderly. While the man and woman’s old-fashioned clothes and careful scrutiny of their respective quill and book offer a wry observation on the passing of youthful exertions, they also bespeak a valued depth of wisdom and experience.
