A square pedestal on a base of two steps, with concave tapered sides, an inscription on the east side, moulded cornice, and a statue of a standing figure in a topcoat.

Oliver Heywood was born in 1825 in Manchester, the son of the banker and philanthropist, Sir Benjamin Heywood. The family’s fortune was derived from banking in the 1800s – Heywood’s Bank in St Ann’s Square was one of the best known of the Manchester banks. He supported and financed projects such as working men's colleges, Owens College, Manchester Grammar School, Hulme Grammar School, St Mary's Hospital, Manchester and Salford Royal hospitals and the Manchester and Salford school boards. In 1888 Heywood’s public work was recognised, when he was made Manchester’s first Honorary Freeman.
