The sculpture is not an allegorical representation of childhood, but a naturalistic portrait of a boy in informal dress playing with shells at the seaside. It shows a real person: the future Liberal politician Savile Brinton Crossley as a nine-year-old boy. It was also reproduced by Copeland in Parian ware.

Savile Crossley had a long and distinguished career as a politician. His father was Francis Crossley, a wealthy carpet manufacturer and philanthropist from Halifax, and another successful Liberal politician.
