Copnall’s bold and large works are reminiscent of American Abstract Expressionism. Yet his work is more controlled: the colour is painted, not poured and the layers of colour built up are precise.

Copnall has had a long and distinguished career. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy; the Hayward, Serpentine and Whitechapel galleries in London; the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham and is in many public and private collections, including Aberdeen Art Gallery, the Arts Council and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital.
