In 1955, Scott painted a group of still lifes with more obviously discernable subject matter than some of the more radically abstract table-tops he had painted in 1953–1954. These kind of simple arrangements of a few still-life elements, often monochrome or using few colours, were to preoccupy him for the rest of his career.
