This is an important early work which marks Teniers' move away from his early landscape style in the manner of Momper towards a more individual response to rural life. Though Teniers repeated this subject of peasants playing bowls many times, this painting is thought to be the first. The figures show the influence of Adrian Brouwer who is known to have tackled the same subject matter. However, the picture also shows the emergence of Teniers' distinctive style of landscape painting. The long shadows emphasise the direction of the game as well as creating mood.
