The sculptor’s own description of the four reliefs states: 'They represent Earth, Air, Fire and Water and form the sides of a stylised geometric mountain representing the world – on which the Phoenix alights to be reborn in flames.Earth is the pregnant figure who emerges from the clay of the relief (see hands) and who is surrounded by orchids. Air is seen against the disc of the sun – striding, borne along by the wind which blows her hair between the fingers of her right hand. Fire is the figure emerging from flames (with stylised flames to her left). Water is the swimming figure. The bird surmounting the structure is double-sided. The mythical Phoenix'.
