Sadler's subjects were mostly costume pieces of the 18th or early 19th century, often having a whimsical, humorous or sentimental theme. Before painting a scene Sadler would create elaborate settings in which local villagers would often pose as models. As he often used the same props and models, these can be seen repeated in many of his paintings. This painting shows the French game of boules being played.
