Desmond was a painter and sculptor who exhibited at the Royal Academy. He moved to Spout House, Boldre in 1890, just around the corner from the bridge he depicts in this painting. Animals provided a subject for a good deal of his work. There is a memorial window to Desmond at Boldre Church.
