The subject is shown wearing a pink gown faced with grey, over a loose chemise. The sitter's clothes and hairstyle date the picture to about 1690–1700. She was previously thought to be Dame Elizabeth Barnard (1608–1670) but this is unlikely owing to the probable date of the painting.

This portrait was in Shakespeare's Birthplace from 1793 until 1820 when Mrs Hornby lived there and was removed by her, along with a portrait thought to be of Sir John Barnard, when she left in 1820. They had previously been in the possession of Thomas Hart, a descendent of Shakespeare's sister Joan Hart.
