The lady's identity is unknown, although her affluent status is indicated by her richly embroidered costume and the numerous pearls adorning her. The painting is very fine and smoothly finished, and the pearls, textiles and skin have a luminous sheen. The painted surface seems denser and more opaque than in many works associated with Carpaccio, to whom this work was traditionally attributed. X-ray analysis has revealed a pentimento where the artist had blocked in the sitter's right shoulder, but subsequently painted over it to alter the outline.
