This portrait is a fond record of a son preparing to depart for war, by his father, the well known artist, Charles Spencelayh, a painter in the Academic style whose work has an intensity while appearing almost photographic in detail.

Vernon Spencelayh was born at Chatham in 1891. His regiment, the West Yorkshire Regiment, denoted by the motif of the white horse of Hanover on the cap badge, saw action at a number of battles on the Western Front and at Gallipoli. Vernon was captured on 27 March 1918 and repatriated on 11 December 1918. After the war he studied painting with his father, going on to specialise in still life compositions, but was never as successful.
