Jean Wilks was educated at North London Collegiate School and Somerville College, Oxford. She was Assistant Mistress of James Allen’s Girls’ School, Dulwich from 1943 to 1951, Head Mistress of Hertfordshire and Essex High School, Bishop’s Stortford from 1951 to 1964, and finally of King Edward VI High School for Girls, Birmingham, from 1965 to 1977. Jean Wilks served as President of the Association of Headmistresses from 1972 to 1974. A member of Council from 1971, she was Deputy Pro-Chancellor for six years, becoming the first woman Pro-Chancellor, from 1985 to 1989. Norman Hepple, the son of the portrait painter Robert Hepple, was trained at the Royal Academy Schools, and became an official war artist with the National Fire Service during the Second World War.
