Professor Mollie McGeown, a pioneer in the field of kidney disease treatment and research, was one of the University’s most distinguished medical graduates and was instrumental in providing life-saving treatment to over 3,000 patients under the kidney transplantation programme. To mark her contribution, Queen’s commissioned a portrait in 2002, which now hangs in the Great Hall. Born in Lurgan, Professor McGeown graduated with honours in Medicine in 1946. Following the establishment of a unit for the treatment of acute renal failure in 1959, a purpose-built dialysis and transplant unit was opened in Belfast City Hospital in 1968. For the next 20 years, the kidney dialysis and transplant programme, under the direction of Professor McGeown, received widespread commendation of its outstanding success rates and its pioneering advances in the clinical care of kidney transplantations.
