Belfast-born physicist William Blair Morton was educated at Belfast Royal Academy, Queen’s College, Belfast and St John’s College, Cambridge. In 1982 he returned to Queen’s as assistant to Professor Everett in the chair of natural philosophy and succeeded to the chair in 1897. An active participant in numerous matters connected with the advancement of the university, he was dean of the faculty of science and a member of the university senate. He retired in 1933 and was awarded an honorary DSc by Queen’s three years later. This painting of Morton, one of the finest portraits McKelvey produced, shows the former seated in semi-profile, dressed in academic robes. Though his pose is formal, the hood shown hanging off his left shoulder lends an air of informality and intimacy to the portrait.
