Mary was Queen Consort of George V. The couple were married in 1893 and declared Prince and Princess of Wales in 1901. A strong supporter of the British Empire, Mary fell in love with India when she toured the country in 1905 and between 1910 and 1911. She became Queen Consort in 1910 and worked tirelessly to promote charitable causes, particularly during the First World War. After the war, she formed the Queen's Work for Women Fund. She was appalled that her son Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry Wallis Simpson and refused to meet his new bride.
