Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and empress of India, succeeded to the throne on 20th June 1837, on the death of her uncle, William IV, and was crowned on 28th June of the following year. On 10th February 1840 she married her cousin, Prince Albert Victor of Saxe-Coburg Gotha; the alliance produced nine children. Her lengthy reign (the longest in British history) saw many political and social changes and a period of unprecedented colonial expansion; between her jubilees of 1887 and 1897, an area of land 40 times the size of Great Britain was added to her empire. The portrait, painted in 1838, shows the Queen in red and gold Dalmatic robes, standing in Westminster Abbey, her right hand on an open bible, taking the coronation oath.
