'Red Rysa' is one of a series of paintings Low made in Orkney in the 1970s. The work typifies her painting of the period, presenting an idealised representation of landscape within a limited palette.

Low is one of a generation of Scottish artists who took inspiration from Northern European Expressionist art in the aftermath of the Second World War. The influence of Edvard Munch in particular can be seen in her early drawings.
