Annie Fearon Walke's husband, Bernard Walke, was the Vicar of St Hilary. The medieval church of St Hilary had been rebuilt in 1853 and left unadorned, so Bernard Walke, with his love of decoration, commissioned his artist friends to decorate the church with representations such as the lives of the Cornish saints. Sadly, in 1932, the church was raided by a group of extreme Protestants who destroyed most of the decoration, including Ernest Proctor's reredos. Shortly afterwards, Bernard Walke contracted tuberculosis and went into a sanatorium where he began writing his account of his 'First Twenty Years at St Hilary'. He retired in 1936 and spent the remaining four years of his life at Mevagissey.
