Bagot was consecrated Bishop of Oxford in 1829, at the time of the Oxford movement which aimed at restoring the High Church ideals of the 17th century. He was not unsympathetic to these aims, but he denounced the "lamentable want of judgement" of the rank and file. The stress permanently affected his health and he requested to come to Bath and Wells. He and his wife Louisa had 8 sons and 4 daughters, and during his time here the major work of building a second storey above the Long Gallery was undertaken. He was also responsible for the style of decoration and ceilings on the first storey, where his coat of arms are displayed.
