Thomas Leonard Hughes was a renowned artist of his time and a student of the Royal Academy. He was commissioned to paint this work by Lord Richard Grosvenor and John Roberts, MP, in 1886. Lord Mostyn also commissioned him to paint 'Colonel Sir Roger Mostyn, the Gallant Defender of Flint Castle (1643)', also in Flint Town Council's collection. In 1892 he was commissioned to paint the Mayors of Chester and Flint. One of his famous paintings is 'Myfanwy' for which he won a gold medal at the National Eisteddfod.
