Notes

Add or edit a note on this artwork that only you can see. You can find notes again by going to the ‘Notes’ section of your account.

A loose style of painting is used here. Particularly striking is the blending of a wide range of colours. This is most noticeable in the sky with the use of soft pinks and blues amongst the clouds. In the top left you can see Richmond Castle. Richmond was known as Riche Monte to the Normans, which translates as 'strong hill'. Dramatically perched on this rocky outcrop in North Yorkshire, the castle overlooks the River Swale and the market town of Richmond, seen in the lower half of the painting.
