Philip Wilson Steer was born in Birkenhead. Along with many British artists he studied in Paris during the early 1800s, joining the New English Art Club when he returned. This was a progressive group formed by French-trained artists as a response to the dissatisfaction they felt towards the conservative work the Royal Academy was exhibiting. During the late 19th and early 20th century the group grew and went on to influence and inspire many other artists. Steer went on to teach at the Slade School of Art, but began to lose the sight in one eye which changed his style and eventually stopped him from painting.
