This painting was used in the design for a 1936 poster advertising the London & North Eastern Railway. Ginner’s image was printed with the caption ‘Ripon: it’s quicker by Rail’. The inter-war years saw a flourishing of British railway posters, as reputable artists were commissioned to produce designs depicting appealing travel destinations such as Ripon Cathedral. Born in France, Ginner studied art in Paris before moving to London in 1910. Here his individual post-impressionist style developed during his involvement with the Camden Town group of artists before 1914. He stayed true to this style throughout his career and was later an Official War Artist during the Second World War.
