Born in 1820, Auguste Paul Charles Anastasi exhibited at the Paris Salon from the age of 24. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1849 and studied under the great landscape painter Camille Corot. Anastasi’s interests lay in atmospheric effects on the surrounding landscape. His early works reveal his fascination with dramatic changes in light and colour in the landscape, during different times of the day and in various weather conditions. Tragically he lost his sight at the age of 50. In 1873 one of his friends organised a sale of the contents of his studio which raised 12,000 francs, enough money to prevent his falling into poverty during the remaining 13 years of his life. This is one of five paintings in The Bowes Museum’s collection by this accomplished artist.
