Joséphine Bowes, the co-founder (with her husband John) of the Bowes Museum, travelled through Europe in 1868. It is very likely that this keen amateur artist passed through the Savoy region and through Switzerland, two areas where she may have brought memories back to paint this view. Her love of large skies and tranquil scenes is evident here; the sky reflected in the quiet waters emphasises the impression of calm while the figures to the left and the village add a human dimension to the awesome natural beauty.
