The ships in the background of this portrait probably refer to Robert Yeamans' activities as a merchant venturer. A native of Bristol, Yeamans acted as a city councillor and from 1641 to 1642 he served as the city's sheriff. Dated 1642 and inscribed with Yeamans' age, 37, the portrait was probably painted to commemorate this term of office. A short time later, Yeamans was involved in a plot to help Prince Rupert take Bristol for the Royalists. He was arrested for treason and, despite the representations of King Charles I, he was hanged, drawn and quartered on 30 May 1643.
