The cenotaph surmounts nine broad steps. The whole is surmounted by a sarcophagus upon which is laid to rest a recumbent figure of a fighting man. Two carved laurel wreaths at the base of the sarcophagus encircling the Rochdale Coat of Arms. A stone of remembrance stands to the south front of the cenotaph with an inscription. From the lower plinth project four carved, painted, flags. On the south-west side are the Union Flag (left) and White Ensign (right); on the north-east side the RAF Ensign (left) and Red Ensign (right). The flagpoles finish in decorative pinnacles which are encircled by laurel wreaths.
