Roger Burman studied at Oundle and the University of Birmingham, and in 1961 entered the family firm, Burman & Sons, a long-standing manufacturer of machinery and in particular motorcycle gearboxes. He moved to the electronic instrument manufacturing company, Teledictor, in 1971, becoming its chairman in 1976. He is chairman of the National Exhibition Centre and the Symphony Hall. Roger Burman was Pro-Chancellor from 1994 to 2001, having also served as Deputy Pro-Chancellor and Deputy Treasurer. His father, Stephen Burman, was Pro-Chancellor in the 1950s and 1960s. The peacock in the background refers to Roger Burman’s keen ornithological interest. Peter Edwards won first prize in the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in 1994, and has since become one of Britain’s most inventive contemporary painters.
