Saint George became the patron saint of England after the Crusades. His armour marks him out as a warrior knight and he is shown here slaying a two-headed dragon, symbolic of the fight between good and evil. The Saint has already thrust a dagger into the smaller dragon’s mouth and we see him driving a lance into the larger mouth on the right.
