'St George and the Dragon' belongs to a group of Richards’s work dating from the late 1940s, in which he took his subject matter from mythology. The main body of this work is concerned with the legend of the Rape of the Sabine Women, however, he executed a number of works depicting the myth of St George slaying the dragon. Both Rubens and Delacroix, whose works were a clear influence on Richards, depicted this myth, and there are other examples in the National Gallery, which Richards would have been familiar with.
