Like the Impressionists, Williams was interested in painting light and atmosphere. His pictures look spontaneous, as if painted out of doors, but many were methodically planned and painted in the studio.

Williams visited Venice several times. In this view across the Grand Canal he captures the sparkling light on the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
