In the left foreground of the picture is a cliff-edge. A seated woman in a bonnet holds a baby, while a small child stands by her side. A man, dressed in a red hat, jacket and dark leggings stands looking out to sea through a telescope. A small dog at his side looks up at him. The right half of the canvas shows the sea, and the reflection of the sky and the sunset on it. There is also a large area of sky over the figures.
