This self portrait is of local artist James Cranke the elder who was born near Barrow-in-Furness, at a village called Little Urswick. He lived there for most of his life. Trained as a plasterer he became a portrait painter and attempted to make his name in London c.1737–1752. Several art historians have recognised that he may have succeeded had ill health not forced him to return home. According to his family, this artist taught the well-known artist, George Romney (1734–1802), when the latter lived in Dalton, close to the home of the Cranke family. As well as this painting, the Dock Museum owns two other paintings by the artist: 'William Cranke as a Boy' and 'Reverend John Cranke as a Boy'.
