An exquisite draftsman and a wonderful colourist, John's attitude to modern art was ambivalent. He admired Cézanne, van Gogh and Gauguin, and the oil panels he exhibited at the Chenil Gallery, Chelsea, in 1910, were hated by traditionalists. Nevertheless, John declined to be included in the second Post-Impressionist exhibition in London in 1912–1913, though he was represented in the much broader New York Armory Show in 1913.
