Wiszniewski was born in Glasgow in 1958 and studied architecture at the Mackintosh School of Architecture before attending Glasgow School of Art, emerging as one of the New Glasgow Boys. Unlike many of his contemporaries Wiszniewski has worked in many different media including painting, print, ceramics and TV screenplays. His work, which often depicts portraits of young men, many of which are in fact self-portraits, is held in many national and private collections including those of the National Gallery of Scotland, Tate Britain and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
