Sergeant Lawrence is shown standing wearing a black hat and dark uniform with red braiding. This was the full rifle uniform of the Dumbartonshire Volunteer Rifle Corp until it changed in 1887. He has a musket or rifle with its butt on the ground and the muzzle end of the barrel resting against the inside of his left arm. In the background is a view of Dumbarton Castle and Dumbarton Rock.
