The date of this painting can be traced to the reign of Charles II, and after 1674, in which year the ship, the Portsmouth, was built. The royal ensign is flying indicating that either the King or his brother the Duke of York (later James II), is on board (Wright, 2002, p. 69).

This grand exhibition of British shipping is meant to excite a proud patriotism in the mind of the viewer; indeed, the naval power of Britain in the seventeenth century was legendary. Combined with the symbol of the British monarchy, the artist's depiction of these grand ships is a powerful reminder of British superiority.
