Landscape first became the dominant theme in McAleer's work in the late 1970s and, since then, has become his major stimulus. Although his painting has been moving towards abstraction since the early 1980s, it has never become fully abstract; in 'Shoreline', the horizon and the distinction between the sky and water can be seen, despite the lack of recognisable topographical features. In keeping with this move towards abstraction, the titles of McAleer's works are usually unspecific and descriptive only in the broadest sense: 'Nightfall' (1985), 'Flood' (1985) and 'Sand Drift' (1986). His paintings are generally executed from an aerial or high view point and are always devoid of human presence. His concern is not to describe landscape but to explore its undulations and patterns; to experience its moods rather than depict its various details.
