Dancer and former artistic director of the Royal Ballet (1986–2001). Dowell joined the Royal Ballet in 1961 and was promoted principal dancer in 1966, becoming one of the foremost dancers of his generation. Among the most notable roles he has created are Oberon in The Dream (1964), Troyte in Enigma Variations (1968) and Beliaev in A Month in the Country (1976). In 2003 Dowell and Wayne Sleep made their debut as the Ugly Sisters in the Royal Ballet's new production of Frederic Ashton's Cinderella.
The sitter, so often directed by choreographers, was posed in this contrived attitude to give the sense of dance. The portrait was based on a series of photographs taken in the sitter's garden in strong sunlight.
