Sir Edward Letchworth (1833–1917) was the Grand Secretary, or Chief Executive, of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1892 until his death, making him the longest-serving Grand Secretary to date. During this time he took part in the foundation ceremonies of over 400 lodges. Letchworth was a solicitor and, in addition to his Freemasonry, he was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA) and a Governor of St Bartholomew’s Hospital.

This portrait was exhibited as a presentation portrait at the Royal Academy in 1903, no. 713.
