Mayor of Chesterfield from 1913–1919 and a prominent local figure, Sir Ernest Shentall had a business as a fruit wholesaler. He was knighted in 1918.

Inscription description

Sir Ernest Shentall, Kt. Mayor 1913,14,15,16,17,18. Alderman and Freeman of the Borough. In recognition of his eminent services, the portrait, the cost of which was raised by public subscription, was presented to Sir Ernest Shentall and given by him to the town.
