Director of the Royal College of Music (RCM) from 1938 to 1952, Sir George Dyson (1883–1964) was the first Director to be a former scholar of the College. A composition student of Stanford from 1900 to 1904, he was awarded a Mendelssohn Scholarship to travel and study in Italy and Germany. He returned in 1907, working in education until the First World War. Following the completion of a doctorate at Oxford, he became a professor at the RCM in 1918, and published an influential monograph on new music. Upon his appointment as Director of the RCM in 1938, he redesigned the curriculum and created a Contemporary Music Society. He remained an active and successful composer throughout his career.
