Sir Henry Wotton (1568–1639) was the author of the famous remark that an ambassador was an honest man sent to lie abroad for the good of his country. He was not only a diplomat but an enthusiastic writer on architecture. His 'Elements of Architecture' (1624) was written in a relaxed and readable style. Wotton was English Ambassador to Venice three times between 1604 and 1624 and he encouraged Inigo Jones to visit the Veneto in 1613–1614 to study the work of Andrea Palladio (1508–1580). Jones brought home to England a treasure trove of Palladio’s drawings, some of which Wotton had owned (now in the Royal Institute of British Architects). Anglo-Palladianism, the architectural style that dominated British architecture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was largely a creation of Jones’s influenced by Wotton.
