Murch was one of the key figures in Bath’s political and cultural life during the 19th century, serving as Mayor seven times. Murch was keen on initiatives to help the poor, in particular improving Bath’s water supply and sanitation. He was also involved in the extensions to Bath’s Guildhall in the 1890s, including the Victoria Art Gallery.

This is one of the first paintings to come into the Gallery’s collection, and was presented as a memorial to Murch.
