Sir Jonathan Trelawny was the son of John Trelawny (c.1533–1568) of Menheniot in Cornwall and Anne Reskymer. He was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1585 and entered the Middle Temple the following year. He married Elizabeth, daughter of his guardian Henry Killigrew, and became MP for Liskeard (1586, 1589 & 1593) and for the County of Cornwall (1597 & 1604). He was an extensive landowner with estates in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, and bought the manor of Trelawne in Pelyant in 1600. While in London in 1604 on service as a knight of the shire in the Parliament of James I, Sir Jonathan died 'from a fit of coughing'. He was buried the following day at St Clement Danes.
